This weekend saw the end of North America’s esports run for the first VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) Challengers as Sentinels won the closed qualifiers.
Sentinels win VCT Challengers
The double-elimination playoffs event boasted the best teams around. Immortals looked like the team to beat. They rolled through everyone and made it to the finals without a match loss. Though eventually, Sentinels came back from the lower bracket to win 3–1. Immortals even started off the finals match hot winning game 1, but couldn’t keep pace. Sentinels won three maps in a row, taking the first VCT Challengers crown.
Ever since Sentinels first signed a VALORANT esports roster, the team made waves with its strength. Even signing Jay “Sinatraa” Won, the 2019 Overwatch World Cup champion, and Shahzeeb “ShahZaM” Khan, a notable CS:GO player. The Sentinels VALORANT roster was stacked with FPS potential.
In the VALORANT Champions Tour event, fans didn’t expect some teams to perform as they did. Teams who previously struggled in competitive events finally shined. Fans were surprised to see teams like XSET Gaming and Immortals make it to the playoffs. North American First Strike winner 100 Thieves didn’t even qualify for the VCT Challengers closed qualifier playoffs.
VALORANT Champions Tour
Operated and produced by Nerd Street Gamers, the first Challengers closed qualifiers event for North American VALORANT esports was a big success. Hundreds of teams fought to get their spot in the next competitive event. While this is only the first of multiple Challengers events in the VALORANT Champions Tour, it signals who will dominate in the future.
So far, Riot Games showed massive support for the esports community through the VALORANT Champions Tour. The competitive format takes the game around the world throughout the year. Riot Games will soon announce more info on the next Challengers tournament and the first Masters event.
